Freddie Mercury heartbreak: How star ‘got ready to die’ after he had ‘sung all he could’

Freddie Mercury: Sister recalls last two weeks of his life

Tonight, Mr Mercury’s life is back in focus in the Channel 5 documentary Queen: A Rock History, which airs from 9.20pm. The legendary performer, who is often regarded as the greatest singer in history, has remained a firm favourite for music fans, with his songs still constantly played across the airwaves. Such was his legacy, dozens of documentaries, films and books have been crafted to explore the life of the award-winning singer.

These include the Channel 5 documentary, which gained a key insight into Mr Mercury’s character in, and out, of the public eye.

He was often thought of as a wild entertainer, thanks largely in part to his extravagant performances while fronting Queen.

But those closest to the Zanzibar-born hitmaker often noted how, away from the spotlight, the 45-year-old could actually be quite shy.

As well as amassing a huge fan base across the globe, Mr Mercury was also revered by other legendary musicians, including the likes of Sir Elton John, David Bowie and Liza Minnelli.

While his music captured the imagination of a generation, another huge part of his legacy was his battle with AIDS, which led to his death in 1991.

His battle was kept away from the spotlight, after his diagnosis in 1987, with only his bandmates and other close associates aware of the condition that was destroying his health and his life.

These included guitarist Brian May’s wife Anita Dobson, who recalled a moment the pair shared prior to his death on the BBC documentary Freddie Mercury: The Final Act.

She noted how Mr Mercury said to her: “Darling, when I can’t sing anymore I’ll just die, I’ll drop dead.”

Ms Dobson added: “When he’d sung all he could sing, he withdrew and he got ready to die.”

A year before his death, Queen was continuing to record, and Mr May noted how “when he came in [the studio] he wasn’t in a great state”.

He continued: “He was finding it hard to walk, even finding it hard to sit.

“He said, ‘Bring the vodka,’ he pours himself a shot, knocks it down and then he props himself up, knocks another vodka back and then he went for it.

“Those notes came out of him and I don’t know where they came from.”

When Mr Mercury’s final vocals for Made in Heaven were recorded, he opted to retire to his home in Kensington, where he was visited by his boyfriend Jim Hutton and personal assistant Peter Featherstone, among others.

Mr May recalled the moment he knew the band’s touring future was over after Mr Mercury explained he was unable to carry on with the schedule.

He said: “We’d done the biggest tour of our lives and it was a great success and we were very happy, and Freddie said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’

“We saw him disappearing and coming back with these burns to his skin. We didn’t like to ask because we didn’t want to know perhaps, and that went on a hell of a long time.

“Freddie at that time was still full of energy but [there were] signs that something was attacking him. We wanted to think it was something else.

“Maybe to do with his liver or something. There was a certain amount of self-deception going on.

“In the end, it became fairly obvious.”

In 2002, Mercury was voted number 58 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.

'Never contemplated coming back' Amanda Burton opens up on Silent Witness return

COOL AND CALM: The star on set for the 25th anniversary series (Image: BBC)

The drama acquired a dogged new crimebuster in the shape of Emilia Fox as Dr Nikki Alexander, and Amanda moved on to pastures new, playing a variety of characters, from an award-winning headteacher in Waterloo Road to a scary gangland matriarch in Marcella.

She had hung up her lab coat and moved on. “I never contemplated coming back, quite frankly,” she says.

“I had the pleasure of doing a magazine photo-shoot with Emilia about five years ago and we were laughing about the prospect of Sam coming back then. We were saying, ‘Ha ha ha, that’s never going to happen!'”

And then – just like that – it did. To mark the 25th anniversary of the show, which is now the longest-running crime drama in the world, Amanda, 65, was invited to return. She could not have been more surprised – or delighted.

“When I got a phone call asking me to come back, I was completely blown away. It’s wonderful to be very surprised sometimes. I just thought, ‘What a great idea! How brilliant that they’re thinking of doing that!’ I would have been absolutely mad not to do it.”

That’s not to say Amanda didn’t have a few initial doubts.

“At first, I was a wee bit worried that Sam might be some on-her-last-legs detective walking across the beach wearing an old tweed coat being called out of retirement,” she says.

HAPPY RETURN: Amanda with Silent Witness cast members David Caves, Genesis Lynea and Emilia Fox

But, of course, the character, last seen heading home to Northern Ireland when a member of her family was involved in a murder, is still at the top of her game.

“I loved the fact that she was still very much pioneering and busy and connected – that meant a lot to me. I was very happy that she wasn’t tracked down to some remote British village where she was judging hen competitions.”

The return proved very emotional. At a glitzy screening in a London theatre this week – complete with real forensic experts in the foyer combing a mocked-up crime scene for evidence in white scenes of crime officer suits – Amanda confessed: “When I first stepped back onto the set of Silent Witness, I wanted to cry.”

What makes Sam’s comeback all the more compelling is that she is now a more ambiguous character than the straightforward crusader for truth she used to be. In the very timely new series, she and her husband Jomo (played by Hugh Quarshie from Holby City) run a medical company pioneering the use of health passporting.

Amanda played Professor Sam Ryan for eight years

After a dramatic incident, Sam calls Nikki and her team, Jack (David Caves) and Simone (Genesis Lynea), for help. Amanda says the fact that there is now a question mark over Sam’s probity makes for a twist remote where she hen fascinating twist.

“Is she really telling the truth? Who is she working for? That’s very intriguing, as Sam has always been so much on the right side and always had such integrity. Now we are seeing she could be a double-edged sword.”

One group of people who will be particularly glad about Sam’s return are the legions of Silent Witness superfans. They frequently come up to Amanda asking when Sam is coming back.

“That often happens when I’m doing my weekly shop in the supermarket and I am a bit of a captive audience… 20 bunches of bananas later! We always have a bit of a cackle about that.

“The fans, of course, are fantastic. They keep the show on the road.”

For her part, 47-year-old Emilia was equally pleased to welcome Amanda back. Her only concern was having to conduct one of Silent Witness’s famous post-mortem scenes in front of an actress who gained world renown for her poise and composure in such sequences.

Indeed, Amanda made them such a trademark that she was granted the honour of a memorable French and Saunders parody which was entitled “Witless Silence”.

Wearing a glamorous gold dress, Emilia says: “It was the most exciting thing to be able to celebrate the 25th series of Silent Witness with Amanda coming back.

“However, it’s nerve-wracking doing a post-mortem on a good day. It’s even more nerve-wracking when you’re doing it in front of Amanda.”

Amanda, dressed in a striped T-shirt, black suit, trainers and multicoloured socks, says Emilia needn’t have worried because in the years away she’s lost her touch with the scalpels and bone saws. “I’ve become a lot more squeamish,” she admits.

“I have to turn away now. I was extremely happy that Emilia did all the post-mortems in this series. I could just be the bystander, stick my beak in and be irritating.”

Perhaps the hardest part of starring in SilentWitness is mastering the very complex medical terminology.

Emilia reveals: “We spend hours and hours learning the lines and trying to find riddle formulas to remember them. ‘There are two Bs in this sentence and three Ws in that one.’ Amanda and I laughed a lot about how many hours we spent learning lines. We could have shed tears.”

Viewers were extremely pleased that there appeared to be some resolution to the long-running “will they/won’t they?” question overhanging the relationship between Nikki and Jack when they enjoyed a highly anticipated kiss in the last series. So will their romance develop this year?

“The kiss threw up many questions,” says Emilia.

“How do friends transition to a relationship? Does that relationship dominate everything? How does it work alongside the job? What happens if it goes wrong? What happens if they are in conflict? The lovely thing is that the and that lot audience have wanted Jack and Nikki to be together. It’s great that they have invested so much in that relationship.”

But aficionados should not expect a quick resolution.

“We wanted to lay the breadcrumbs and keep that flirtation and ambiguity about it,” says David, 42. “We didn’t want it to be too much, too soon. We wanted to tease.”

Silent Witness still generates huge ratings of nine million viewers per episode. Emilia thinks that staying topical through 25 seasons may be part of its continuing popularity.

“The DNA of the show is crime stories and the way people commit and solve crimes,” she says.

“But it also incorporates very topical stories like health passports and challenging stories like domestic abuse or care homes. We are not afraid of that – the show can take it. It gives us the chance to talk about subjects that people generally steer clear of. It allows viewers to discuss them from the safety of their sofas.”

So could the actors envisage Silent Witness surviving another 25 years?

“I don’t know if they’d still want me,” Emilia jokes. “I’ll be lucky if they’re still inviting me back when I’m 72. Still, they’ve just had Amanda back. Long may they keep asking us back.”

Amanda chimes in: “You’ll just have to ask me in another 25 years. By then Sam really would be judging hen competitions.”

  • The 25th series of Silent Witness begins on BBC1 later this month

Nicole Kidman’s ‘reaction’ to Will Smith, Chris Rock happened hours before Oscars slap

Sorry to disappoint meme fans.

Nicole Kidman went viral on social media on Sunday for a photo of what appeared to be her “reacting” to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.

But as it turns out, the pic was snapped before the Oscars 2022 even began broadcasting.

The Best Actress nominee, 54, was photographed sitting in her Armani Privé gown with her jaw dropped and eyes wide open while possibly beginning to emerge from her seat.

While many fans assumed that Kidman was reacting to the slap, the photo was taken around 4:30 p.m. PT as guests were still taking their seats — a full three hours before the slap.

Leading up to the broadcast part of the evening, the Oscars presented eight awards in categories such as film editing, sound, makeup and hairstyling, among others.

Kidman’s stunned facial expression — most likely to one of those winners — became a viral meme after it was taken out of context.

The photo went viral as various accounts falsely claimed that Kidman was reacting to the moment Smith, 53, struck Rock, 57, onstage after the comedian mocked Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head.

“Nicole Kidman reacting to the Chris Rock and Will Smith incident at the #Oscars . A NEW MEME IS BORN,” one fan tweeted along with the pic.

“NicoleKidman and her husband [Keith Urban] having a front row seat watching Will Smith slap the s–t out of Chris Rock #Oscars#Oscars2022,” another person wrote.

A third tweeted, “Nicole Kidman should have won an Oscar for her reaction to the Will Smith Slap.”

“Will Smith slapped Chris Rock so hard he cracked Nicole Kidman’s Botox,” another joked.

Fans were also quick to meme Lupita Nyong’o, who sat behind Smith as he told Rock to “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.”

“Lupita Nyongo is all of us slowing realizing it’s not a bit, and Will is MAD mad #Oscars2022,” a fan tweeted alongside a video clip.

“Lupita Nyongo in this whole will smith thing went through the entire range of emotions sitting there. She had like 8 wholly different reactions in like 5 seconds,” another wrote.

Smith stunned the audience when he walked on stage and hit Rock in the face after the comedian joked about Pinkett Smith, 50, starring in “G.I. Jane 2” — mocking the actress’ alopecia.

The “King Richard” star later gave a tearful apology to the Academy and his fellow nominees for his actions during his Best Actor acceptance speech. However, we’re told he and Rock didn’t bury the hatchet until after the awards show.

Sean “Diddy” Combs confirmed exclusively to Page Six at the Vanity Fair afterparty that Rock and Smith had worked things out.

“That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that,” Diddy, 52, told us, adding that the two are “brothers.”

Unseen Sharon Tate bikini photos discovered in California garage

Never-before-seen photos of murdered blond bombshell Sharon Tate have been found in a California garage.

A series of snapshots of the late actress posing on a towel and rocking a green bikini while lounging under the sun was taken by her roommate’s husband on his front lawn in Manhattan Beach, California, in May 1964.

The candids showed the then-21-year-old looking happy and model-esque. Tate was murdered by members of the Charles Manson family just five years later when she was eight months pregnant.

The photos were discovered in 2017 by Ashley Miller Cabrejas, who is the stepdaughter of Donald Hagen, according to South West News Service. He was married to the silver screen star’s roommate.

Tate had been pals with Hagen’s first wife, Laurie, whom he married in 1964. Laurie was besties with Tate as they were both aspiring actresses and models hailing from Tacoma, Washington.

New photos have been unearthed of actress Sharon Tate, who was killed by Charles Manson and his followers.
Donald Hagen/Ashley Miller Cabrejas / SWNS

Cabrejas, 46, had been searching for camera equipment to photograph a solar eclipse when she came across the pics.

“They had been sitting in our garage for years until I came across them cleaning his stuff,” the West Los Angeles native told SWNS.

She added that the photos were “totally a casual thing, from before she was even famous.” Tate was just starting to build her career at the time and was going to a plethora of auditions.

The “Valley of the Dolls” icon was married to director Roman Polanski at the time of her death in 1969. She was 26 years old when she was stabbed.

The snaps showed Hagen with lots of women, including Tate. “Don and Sharon were, I guess, what you would assume normal for the roommate of your girlfriend and future wife,” Cabrejas said of her stepfather. “I went through all his pics. I found out that [he] was quite the ladies’ man, to say the least.”

The substitute teacher’s stepdad passed away after a battle with dementia in 2017 after being with her mother for 25 years. He had no biological children and left his entire estate to Cabrejas.

“That’s why his license plates say DON1, aka ‘Don Juan.’ Then I started digging and, man oh man, was he a bad boy, but it was the ’60s,” she joked. “He was a playboy and honestly I didn’t really know who he was until he passed. All I knew while he was alive is that he loved us and he had a past.”

She also stated that during holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, she would hear stories about Hagen’s friendship with Tate. However, because she was going through normal teen angst at the time, she didn’t pay much attention.

“I really wish I would have asked more questions but it was difficult since that life he had was a life before my mom,” Cabrejas added.

The educator admitted that Hagen “went to check out the property” where Tate was killed before he moved his family in.

“I know that it really, really haunted him his whole life,” she said.

“It’s just a really cool part of LA history where I live, and pretty amazing that these were sitting in my garage, and my family –– even at distance –– is part of iconic LA,” Cabrejas continued.
